If you haven't already done so, take time to visit the Automation pages on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation site <http://www.gatesfoundation.org/granteesupport/automation/default.htm>.  The site includes an automation guide the following topics: frequently asked questions, automation planning process, selecting and evaluating software, modules and special features, evaluating different conversion processes, and purchase - contract negotiations. The guide also includes a glossary of automation terms and worksheets for comparison shopping. In addition to the automation guide, the site includes an automation integration guide, vendors and systems, and resources.

Peter Scott's newest endeavor, LibDex <http://www.libdex.com/>, is a directory of library websites organized by country (latest count 13,031 libraries), web based OPACs organized by vendor name, and Friends of the Library pages. The directory is searchable by keyword or exact match.

Curious about how the implementation of a new system went at the Library of Congress last year. Check out The Library of Congress Integrated Library System Program site <http://lcweb.loc.gov/ils/>. It provides background, frequently asked questions, the RFP used for the purchase and links to Powerpoint presentations made at ALA Midwinter 2000 and Computers in Libraries 2000.
