Using Existing Database Management Systems To Implement An IOLS An integrated online library system is a cost-effective way to control and distribute information resources. Most libraries select a system from the variety of systems that have been developed and priced for all types and sizes of collections. These off-the-shelf systems offer essentially the same features, OPAC, circulation, acquisitions, Web browser, TOCs, and serials control; however they differ in the way each product integrates these features. Other libraries, depending on management objectives, develop library systems using in-house or database management software such as Lotus Notes, Access or SQL Server.

BASIS Techlib : Working the Web With everyone rushing to develop products for the web, it shouldn't surprise anyone that the IOLS vendors are in the process of developing new products that make use of the web for a variety of purposes. One of the vendors leading the charge in web development is the Basis division of Open Text (formerly Information Dimensions). IOLS shoppers who are interested in making use of web functionality for both library management processes (cataloging, circulation, etc.) and for end users access to a web OPAC will want to include Basis Techlib in their review of systems.

A Few Successful IOLS Project Tips Library managers face pitfalls during the process of selecting their first Integrated Online Library System
(IOLS) or replacing or upgrading a first generation system. Mary Dzurinko provides tips for avoiding IOLS implementation disasters.

Great Site Spotlight

For libraries in the process of planning an IOLS project, the University of Hawaii at Manoa Library's "Review of Library Systems (ROLS) Project" Web site is a good example of how to do it right. One of the most valuable features of ROLS is the "Basic Criteria for Vendor Consideration" list. Other features include:

  • Timetables for Planning for Funding meetings, Vendor Demonstrations schedules, and Evaluation sessions;
  • Statistical data about the library's sites and collections;
  • Lists of project committees;
  • Links to White papers, RFPs, selected vendors, vendor customers.
